Lib Dems respond to Labour selecting Afzal Khan in Manchester Gorton

By Liberal Democrats Mar 23, 2017 4

Commenting on Afzal Khan being selected as the Labour candidate in the Manchester Gorton by-election last night, Liberal Democrat candidate Jackie Pearcey said:

"I would like to congratulate Afzal Khan on narrowly coming out on top of what has been a long and bitterly fought internal Labour selection battle. I now look forward to taking him on in what is shaping up to be a clear head-to-head between Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

"Mr Khan last night defended Jeremy Corbyn's decision to order Labour MPs to vote in favour of a hard Brexit. 62% of voters in Manchester Gorton voted for a different future and I will continue to speak up for them.

"I will also speak up for the thousands of residents who are angry and let down by the way this arrogant and out-of-touch Labour council does business.

"Above all I will speak up for those who want an effective opposition to the Government over its handling of the NHS. As Labour's bitter internal selection battle has shown, they are simply too busy fighting amongst themselves to provide a decent opposition."
